Consolidatedtablesshowinganextensivelistingofthehighestindependentlycon-®rmede cienciesforsolarcellsandmodulesarepresented.Guidelinesforinclusionofresultsintothesetablesareoutlined,andnewentriessinceJune1997arebrie¯ydescribed.#1998JohnWiley&Sons,Ltd.

INTRODUCTION

SinceJanuary1993,ProgressinPhotovoltaicshaspublished6-monthlylistingsofthehighestcon®rmede cienciesforarangeofphotovoltaiccellandmoduletechnologies.1±10Byestablishingguidelinesfortheinclusionofresultsintothesetables,thisnotonlyprovidesanauthoritativesummaryofthecurrentstateoftheartbutalsoencouragesresearcherstoseekindependentcon®rmationofresultsandtoreportresultsonastandardizedbasis.

Brie¯y,themaincriterionforinclusionofresultsinthesetablesisthattheybemeasuredatoneofthedesignatedtestcentreslistedpreviously6,7understandardizedtestconditions.Adistinctionisalsomadebetweenthreedi erentcellareameasurements:totalarea,apertureareaanddesignatedilluminationarea.1,2`Activearea'e ciencymeasurementsarenotincluded.(Thisexplainssomeofthedi erencesbetweenresultsreportedhereandintheliterature,forexample,withrecenttandemamorphousSicellresults.)Therearealsocertainminimumvaluesofareaencouragedforthedi erentcelltypes,althoughsomediscretionisexercisedhere(0.05cm2foraconcentratorcell,0.25cm2foratandemcell,1cm2fora1-suncelland800cm2foramodule).

NEWRESULTS

Highestcon®rmedcellandmoduleresultsarereportedinTablesI±III.Anychangesinthetablesfromthosepublishedpreviously10aresetinboldtype.TableIsummarizesthebestmeasurementsforcellsandsubmodules,TableIIshowsthebestresultsformodulesandTableIIIshowsthebestresultsforcon-centratorcellsandconcentratormodules.TableIVcontainswhatmightbedescribedas`notableexcep-tions'.Whilenotconformingtotherequirementstoberecognizedasaclassrecord,thecellsandmodulesinTableIVhavenotablecharacteristicsthatwillbeofinteresttosectionsofthephotovoltaiccommunity.Possiblyasaresultofthelargenumberof`last-minute'resultsreportedinthepreviousissueofthesetables,10relativelyfewnewresultswerereceivedintimeforinclusioninthepresentversionofthe
